Why Get Dental Crowns?

Restoration of Tooth Function

Crowns fix teeth that are damaged or weak. The crown covers the whole tooth. This makes the tooth strong again so you can chew and bite without problems.

Crowns look natural and nice. If you have a tooth that is discolored, misshapen, or decayed, a crown can make it look good as new. Your smile will look great!

Crowns last a long time if you take care of them. With good brushing and regular dental visits, your crowns can stay strong for 10 years or more.

How It Works

Teeth Preparation For Crown Placement

On the first visit, I will trim the natural enamel before placing the crown. This will create space and help with secure bonding. In addition, extra material may be applied to strengthen specific areas. This is to make a strong base for the new crown.

Impressions From Your Teeth

We will capture images of your teeth. We will do this either with putty or a scanner. Then, we will send the images to a dental lab for your custom crown.

Placing a Temporary Crown

Typically, it takes two to three weeks, sometimes longer, for a dental lab to craft your new crown. Meanwhile, we will install a temporary crown made of resin or acrylic.

Removing Temporary Crowns

On your second visit, we gently remove temporary crowns from the tooth we prepared. We use dental instruments to do this. Next we examine and clean the tooth for permanent crown placement.

Crown Assessment

We examine the appearance and alignment of your new crown. We ensure it matches the nearby teeth’s shape, color, and fit.

Crown Attachment

We bond the new crown onto your tooth using strong dental cement. This ensures a secure and durable attachment.

Are dental crowns considered permanent fixtures?

With proper care and maintenance dental crowns can last up to 30 years. However, you might need to replace yours sooner if they get cracked or damaged.

Expect recovery from a dental crown procedure within a few hours to a few days. There might be some possible mild gum soreness. You can use over-the-counter pain relievers to ease the discomfort.

  • Ice cubes
  • Very hard nuts
  • Popcorn with kernels
  • Sticky treats like taffy and caramels

These items have the potential to harm or dislodge your crown.

Dental crowns typically last up to 30 years with proper care and maintenance. They last up to 15 years on average.

  • Brush teeth at least twice daily using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.
  • Floss between teeth once daily.
  • Use antibacterial mouthwash to prevent dental plaque and harmful bacteria.
  • Avoid very hard, crunchy, or chewy foods.
  • Consult your dentist about using a custom mouth guard if you grind or clench your teeth (bruxism).
  • Schedule routine dental cleanings and exams.

Your dental crown should not cause pain. Inform your dentist for additional anesthesia if you experience discomfort during the procedure.

A dental crown is suitable for extensively damaged or decayed teeth. It provides versatility for reinforcing cracks or enhancing aesthetics.

  1. Metal crowns: Made from alloys such as gold or base metal alloys.
